Hydrogen chloride is a clear gas.

Hydrochloric acid 01

It is made of two parts. One part is hydrogen. The other part is chlorine. These two parts stay joined together. This bond is called a polar covalent bond. This means the two parts do not share power equally. The chlorine part pulls harder on the power.

This gas is very good at mixing with water. When it touches water, it makes hydrochloric acid. This acid is very strong. It can even make white clouds in the air.

People use this gas and acid in many ways. They use them to make things in big factories. For example, it helps make a plastic called PVC. It also helps make a material called Neoprene.

Scientists use special tools to study this gas. They use a tool called an infrared spectrometer.

This tool looks at how the gas reacts to light. It can show how the tiny parts move. This helps us learn more about how the gas works.
