Triage

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Triage is a vital way that medical workers organize care during emergencies. It is used when there are more injured people than there are doctors or supplies. This often happens during a mass casualty incident. The main goal is to decide who should get help first. Doctors want to make sure limited supplies go to those who can benefit most.

This way of sorting helps save as many lives as possible.

To sort patients, medical providers use a fast check called an ABCDE assessment. This is a step-by-step way to see how the body is working. First, they check the airway to see if anything is blocking it. Next, they check breathing to see if it is normal. Then, they check circulation to look at the heart rate. They also check for disability by seeing how the person responds to pain. Finally, they check for exposure to see if there is bleeding or trauma.

The idea of sorting injuries is very old. A document from 17th-century BCE Egypt called the Edwin Smith Papyrus describes it. This papyrus divided injuries into three groups based on whether they could be healed.

Modern triage grew much later during the time of Napoleon. Baron Dominique-Jean Larrey was a surgeon who helped create the groundwork for today's methods. He believed doctors should treat people based on their injuries, not their rank or nationality.

Many different systems exist around the world today. In the United States, many people use the START model for simple triage. Canada uses the CTAS model, and Australia uses the ATS model. Medical workers often use triage tags to keep track of everyone. These are labels that show a patient's name, injuries, and how much help they need.

Some advanced systems even use special markers to show if a person has touched dangerous materials.

Think of triage like sorting mail or organizing a busy classroom. When there is too much to do at once, you must pick the most important tasks first. In a hospital, doctors might even use "reverse triage" to prepare for a big event. This might mean sending stable patients home to make room for new ones.

Triage is a difficult job because it requires balancing many hard choices. It helps turn a chaotic scene into an organized path for healing.
