It is a bus rapid transit system, which people often call a BRT. This system helps many people travel quickly through a very busy city. It was built to help reduce traffic during the rush hours. Today, it is known as the premier public transit option for the city.

It is the longest BRT system in the entire world. The total length of the system is 251.2 km.

The way this system works is quite special and organized. The buses travel in their own dedicated lanes called busways. These lanes are often separated from other cars by concrete blocks.

This keeps the buses moving without getting stuck in traffic. Most routes stay on the ground level of the street. However, Corridor 13 is different because it uses an elevated track. This means the bus travels on a raised path above the ground. This helps the bus stay on its specific path.

Leaders in Jakarta wanted a fast and affordable way for everyone to travel.

In 2001, a plan for this system was first proposed. The Governor at that time was named Sutiyoso. He suggested several ways to move people, including trains and monorails. However, the BRT was chosen because it could be built quickly. It did not require large investments from other countries. A group called the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy helped with the planning.

Transjakarta has grown a huge amount since it first opened.

The very first line began operating on 15 January 2004. At first, the rides were free for two weeks. Commercial service officially started on 1 February 2004. In 2015, there were only 605 buses in the system. By 2020, that number grew to 4,300 buses. As of March 2026, the system serves about 1.4 million passengers every single day. The cost for a ride has stayed at Rp 3,500 since the start.

You might notice that many of these buses are changing.

The city is working hard to use cleaner energy. They are adding many electric buses to the fleet right now. There are currently 470 electric buses in use. The goal is to have 50 percent of all buses be electric by 2027. By the year 2030, the city wants the whole system to use electric buses. This helps make the air in the city much cleaner for everyone.
