Transformers is a massive media franchise about alien robots. These robots are special because they can change their shapes. They can turn into vehicles, animals, or even weapons. The stories usually follow two groups at war. One group is the heroic Autobots. The other group is the villainous Decepticons.

This franchise includes many things like toys, cartoons, and movies. By 2011, it had become one of the highest-grossing media franchises ever.

Making these stories involves many different steps and creators. It began with toys from Japanese lines called Diaclone and Micro Change. A designer named Shōji Kawamori helped create the idea of transforming mecha. Hasbro bought these toys and partnered with the company Takara. To build the stories, Hasbro hired Marvel Comics. An editor named Jim Shooter and a writer named Dennis O'Neil worked on the early tales. O'Neil is the person who gave Optimus Prime his name.

The history of the brand is very long. It started in 1984 with the original toy line. The first era is often called Generation 1, or G1. This covers the original animated series and the comic books. Many different versions of the story have come out since then. There was a series called Beast Wars that created its own mini-universe. Some stories, like the Unicron Trilogy, link several shows together.

There are many specific facts about these robot worlds. In the original cartoon, the robots crash-land on prehistoric Earth. They arrive in ships called the Ark and the Nemesis. The hero Optimus Prime uses a tool called the Creation Matrix to give life to machines. In a 1986 movie, the story moves to the year 2005. This film introduced a planet-devouring character named Unicron. The movie also featured famous voices like Orson Welles.

Transformers connects to many things you might already know. You might recognize characters from comic books or big movies. For example, the early Marvel comics even had Spider-Man appear. Some versions of the story are very different from others. The Beast Wars series features robots called Maximals and Predacons. These robots take on organic animal forms to survive on a primitive planet. Even though the stories change, the idea of changing shape stays the same.
