Topographic map

geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A topographic map is a special kind of map. It shows the shape and pattern of the land. Most maps only show where things are on a flat surface. These maps go further by showing height too.

They show both natural things and things made by people. You might see rivers, forests, and hills. You can also find roads, buildings, and even the names of places.

These maps are different from maps that only show one topic. They also differ from maps that do not show height at all.

To show height, these maps use contour lines. A contour line is a curve that connects points at the same altitude. For example, every point on a line marked 100 meters is exactly 100 meters above sea level.

By looking at these lines, you can tell if the land is flat or steep. Close lines might mean a steep cliff. Spread out lines might mean a gentle slope. You can use these lines to find ridges or draws in the earth.

Some people use a tool called a curvimeter to measure distances on these maps.

People have been making these maps for a long time. In 1766, Andrew Dury and John Andrews made a map of Hartfordshire. It used a method called hachures to show the shape of the land.

Later, in 1789, the first large map series for a whole country was finished. This was the Carte géométrique de la France. In 1802, the East India Company started the Great Trigonometric Survey of India. This huge project helped people find the exact height of Himalayan peaks. Even from over one hundred miles away, they could see them clearly.

In the past, many maps were made for the military. Soldiers used them to plan battles and find safe spots for defense. This is why the United Kingdom's Ordnance Survey has its name. In the United States, the government took over map making in 1879. This work moved to the United States Geological Survey.

In 1913, a project called the International Map of the World began. It wanted to map the whole Earth using about one thousand sheets. Each sheet was about 44 cm high and up to 66 cm wide.

Today, many topographic maps are digital. We use computers and satellites to make them very accurate. This digital data helps our GPS systems work much better.

Many people use these maps for different jobs. Engineers use them to build roads or plan mines. Scientists use them to study the Earth. Even people who love the outdoors use them. Hikers and scouts use them to find their way while exploring the wild.
