It helps us see the oceans and the continents. Making these maps is a very big job. The Earth is a three-dimensional shape like a ball. Maps are usually flat, or two-dimensional. This creates a problem called projection. A projection is a way to show a globe on a flat plane. Every projection must distort some parts of the world. This means size, distance, or direction might look different.

One famous example is the Mercator Projection. It was first made to help people sail the seas.

There are many different kinds of maps. Some maps are political maps. These focus on human settlement and territorial boundaries. Other maps are physical maps. They show things like mountains or soil types. You might also see geological maps. These show rocks and fault lines under the surface. Some maps use colors to show facts. These are called choropleth maps. They use color to show things like money or people. You can even find thematic maps. These focus on just one subject, like culture or farming.

In the past, making maps was much harder. Before the Middle Ages, people did not know much. They knew very little about the land. They had not seen most coastlines. They had not seen the middle of continents. Knowledge grew fast during the European Renaissance. Explorers traveled to new places. By the mid-1700s, most coastlines were mapped. By the twentieth century, the land interiors were known too.

This helped people make much better maps.

Maps have changed a lot over time. Old maps from the Iron Age are very different. Medieval maps, like the Mappa mundi, show a different view. These old maps show what people believed back then. They show the culture and ideas of that time. Today, we use many tools to make maps. Some are digital maps made by special authorities. There are also huge international projects. One was called the International Map of the World. These projects help us understand our planet better.

Maps are more than just pictures of land. They are a way for scientists to share ideas. They pass their knowledge to future generations. Maps can show us how the world works. They help us see how places connect to each other. We use them to study the whole globe. Whether they show stars or seas, they are vital. They help us see our home from a new way.
