Some maps even change when you touch them. They can show the surface of the Earth or what is deep inside it.

A map is a very old invention used by many different people.

Making maps is a special job called cartography.

A person who makes these maps is a cartographer. They use symbols to represent real things like roads or rivers.

A map legend explains what these signs and colors mean. Sometimes, cartographers use a trick called decluttering. They leave out small things like tiny streams to make the map easier to read. This helps you find what you need without getting lost in too much detail.

People have been making maps for thousands of years.

Later, great civilizations in Babylon, Greece, Rome, China, and India made large maps. In the past, some maps were drawn on globes to show the round Earth. Gerardus Mercator was a famous geographer who made a special way to show the world on flat paper. He was also the first person to make an atlas, which is a book of many maps.

Maps use different directions to help us find our way.

Today, most maps put north at the top. This is a recent way of doing things. Long ago, many maps put east at the top because it was the direction of the Garden of Eden.

Early Islamic maps often put south at the top. This was because south was the direction of Mecca. Some maps even put the sea at the top or focus on a specific road.

Scale helps us understand how big a place really is.

A scale might say 1:10,000, which means one unit on the map is 10,000 units in real life. Because the Earth is a round ball, it is hard to make a perfectly flat map. This causes distortion, which means some shapes or sizes might look a bit wrong.

Some maps, called cartograms, change shapes on purpose to show things like how many people live in a place. Maps are tools that help us see our world in new ways.
