Hypsometry

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Hypsometry is the study of Earth's surface. It measures how high or low things are. We use mean sea level as a starting point. Some places sit high above the sea. Other places sit deep below the sea. These can be positive or negative values.

This work helps us understand our world. It shows us the shape of our planet.

Earth has two main levels of height. We call this a bimodal distribution. This means there are two main peaks. One peak is for the continents. The other peak is for the ocean floors. This happens because of density. The continental crust is light. The oceanic crust is much denser.

Other planets often have only one level. This is because they lack plate tectonics.

Scientists use a special graph called a hypsometric curve. This graph is a type of histogram. It shows elevation on the vertical y-axis. It shows the area on the horizontal x-axis. You can also scale these numbers. This is called a non-dimensional curve. It helps experts compare different watersheds. A watershed is an area of land.

A scientist might use this to see how similar lands are.

Arthur Strahler worked on this topic. He wrote an original paper about these curves. He proposed a way to fit the curves using three parameters. These parameters are called a, d, and z. Later research used landscape evolution models. These models questioned how well the curve works. Some scientists say it has trouble with scale. Now, people use a modified curve with an extra parameter.

These tools are very useful for many jobs. People who study lakes use them too. This field is called limnology. The curves show the lake surface area and depth. This helps find the total lake volume. It can also help predict how water mixes. It can show how chemicals dilute in the water. It even helps predict how productive a lake is.

It is a great way to map our world.
