Thomas Anderson is a prominent American technology entrepreneur. He is most famous for co-founding the social networking website Myspace in 2003. During the height of the site's popularity, he served as its president. He is also a well-known internet figure from the early 2000s. Many users called him "My friend, Tom" or "Myspace Tom." This was because his profile was automatically assigned as the first friend to every new user. This unique feature made him a recognizable face across the early social web.

Anderson's career path involved several different companies and transitions. In 2000, he worked as a product tester and copywriter at XDrive. XDrive was a company that focused on digital storage. While working there, he met his future business partner, Chris DeWolfe. When XDrive went bankrupt in 2001, Anderson and DeWolfe formed a direct marketing company called ResponseBase. They sold ResponseBase to a company named eUniverse in late 2002. This sale led to the creation of Myspace in August 2003. Anderson and DeWolfe built the site partly to react to a competitor called Friendster. Friendster had a policy that blocked accounts not using real names.

As Myspace grew, it moved through different corporate structures. Intermix Media became the successor to eUniverse. It was under Intermix Media that Myspace achieved its massive popularity. Eventually, the company and Myspace were sold to News Corp in 2005. This acquisition was a massive financial event, valued at $580 million. Following this sale, Anderson took on the role of president of the company. However, the transition to a large corporation changed how the work was done. Anderson noted that budget reviews and new processes made getting things done more difficult.

Despite his success, the corporate environment created new challenges for the leadership. An unnamed executive from News Corp suggested that Anderson became a bottleneck for productivity. This means that the processes for getting things done were slowed down by his role. In April 2009, News Corp replaced Anderson as the president of the company. By the year 2010, his famous role as the default friend ended. A new profile called "Today On MySpace," or "T.O.M.," took his place on new user profiles.

Anderson's life before his tech career was quite diverse. He grew up in Escondido, California, and attended San Pasqual High School. As a teenager, he was a computer hacker using the name "Lord Flathead." This activity once led to a raid by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). He later attended the University of California, Berkeley, where he studied English and rhetoric. During this time, he was also the lead singer of a band named Swank. After graduation, he lived in Taiwan before moving to Los Angeles. There, he studied film at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

In recent years, Anderson has shifted his focus toward different interests. In 2012, he joined a Los Angeles company called RocketFrog Interactive as an adviser. This company had about 16 people and created an app for Facebook. However, by 2014, Anderson expressed that he was not looking to return to his old career. He stated that he enjoys the idea of adventure and the unknown. He prefers to see where his life will lead him rather than staying in one field.

Today, Anderson is very active in the world of photography. His interest in the craft grew after attending the 2011 Burning Man festival. He works with his friend, the photographer Trey Ratcliff, to develop his skills. Anderson does not try to capture nature exactly as it looks in real life. Instead, he tries to make beautiful images, much like a painter would. He travels to many different countries, including Myanmar and Thailand. He focuses primarily on taking landscape images during his global travels. He remains active on social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook.
