A toilet seat is a hinged unit used for sitting. It is bolted onto the bowl of a toilet. Most seats include a lid to cover the bowl when it is not in use.

Some people leave the lid open, but others keep it closed. Closing the lid can stop small items from falling into the bowl. It can also help reduce smells in the room. Some studies show that closing the lid prevents tiny water droplets, called aerosols, from spreading when you flush.

There are many different ways a toilet seat can work. Some seats use special hinges to create a slow-close effect. These hinges provide resistance so the seat does not slam against the bowl. Other seats are designed for public use and have an open front. These are also called split seats.

The open front design prevents certain parts of the body from touching the seat. This design also helps avoid areas that might be contaminated with urine. In some places, like jails, the seats are built into metal toilets and cannot be removed.

People have been inventing new types of seats for a long time. Cyril Reginald Clayton made the first electrically heated toilet seat. He worked at St Leonard's on Sea in Sussex. He applied for a UK patent on January 5, 1959. His first model was named the 'Deluxete.' It was made of fiberglass and used a mercury switch to start the heat. This switch turned the heater on when the lid was down. Later, a model called the 'Deodar' was made with a fan to help with smells.

Many interesting facts exist about how seats are made and used. In Japan, high-tech seats are very common and often include a bidet. A bidet is a tool that uses water for cleaning. These seats have been popular in Japan since the 1970s. In 1942, J.C. Thomasa invented a dispenser for disposable paper seat covers. In 1993, Matt DiRoberto from Massachusetts invented a padded toilet seat. Even the US Navy had a famous story about expensive toilet parts. In 1987, the Lockheed Corporation charged $640 for a molded plastic cover for a P-3C Orion aircraft.

Toilet seats can be part of your home decor. They come in many colors and styles to match a bathroom. Some are made of wood, such as oak or walnut. Other seats are made of soft materials for comfort. Some even have colorful designs like flowers or seashells inside clear plastic.

You might even see decorative textile covers on the lid. While some people think these covers are helpful, others think they are hard to keep clean. Whether a seat is high-tech or simple, it is a helpful part of a bathroom.
