Her work helps us understand how machines think. This is a very important job for our future.

Timnit studies how AI can make mistakes. For example, she looked at facial recognition software. This is a tool that helps computers see human faces. She found that some tools were not fair. Black women were 35% less likely to be recognized than White men. This happened because of biases in the software. She also studied large language models. These are AI tools that use many words to talk. She warned that these models might spread wrong information.

Timnit has had a very interesting life. She was born in Ethiopia to parents from Eritrea. When she was 15, she moved to the United States. She went to Stanford University to study. She earned a degree in electrical engineering. Later, she earned a PhD in computer vision in 2017. Computer vision is how machines see and understand images. She was even advised by the scientist Fei-Fei Li.

She has worked at many big companies. First, she was an intern at Apple. She worked on making parts for audio tools. Later, she worked at Microsoft as a researcher. In 2018, she joined Google. She led a team that studied AI ethics. Ethics is the study of what is right and wrong. In December 2020, she left Google after a big disagreement. Google asked her to change a research paper she wrote. They said the paper ignored some research. Timnit disagreed with this choice.

Many people admire Timnit for her hard work. She helped start a group called Black in AI. This group helps Black researchers in the field of AI. She also started the DAIR research institute. Fortune named her one of the 50 Greatest Leaders. Time also called her one of the most influential people. Her work shows us how to build better tools. She teaches us to make technology fair for all people.
