Timnit was born in Ethiopia. She lived in Eritrea too. When she was 15, she moved to the U.S. She went to Stanford University. She earned a PhD in computer vision. Computer vision helps machines see and understand images.

Timnit wants to make technology fair. She found that some tools do not work well for everyone. For example, facial recognition tools sometimes fail to see Black women. She co-founded a group called Black in AI. This group helps Black people in science. She also started the DAIR research institute.

Timnit worked at Google for a few years. She led a team on AI ethics. Ethics is the study of what is right and wrong. In 2020, she left Google after a big disagreement. She wrote a paper about the risks of large language models. These are AI tools that use lots of words. Google asked her to change or pull the paper. Google then ended her job. Many people signed letters to support her.
