technology Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Andrew Ng is a very famous computer scientist. He focuses on machine learning and artificial intelligence, which people often call AI. Machine learning is a way to help computers learn from data. AI is when machines act smart, almost like humans do.

Ng has helped many people understand these hard topics. He wants to make AI tools available to everyone in the world. This goal is often called democratizing deep learning.

Ng uses many different ways to help computers learn. One way is through deep learning, which uses large networks to find patterns. At Google, he led the Google Brain project. This project used 16,000 computer cores to train a neural network. The network watched YouTube videos to learn what a cat looked like. It learned to recognize cats without anyone telling it what a cat was.

This kind of learning helps machines see and understand the world.

Andrew Ng has had a very busy career in many places. He was born in London in 1976 to parents from Hong Kong. His family moved to Singapore in 1984 when he was young. He went to Carnegie Mellon University to study computer science and economics. Later, he earned a master's degree from MIT in Massachusetts. He finished his studies with a Ph.D. from UC Berkeley in 2002.

He has worked at some of the biggest technology companies. He was a cofounder and leader of Google Brain. From 2014 to 2017, he was the chief scientist at Baidu. He even helped build a chatbot for healthcare called Melody. In 2018, he started the AI Fund to help new companies. This fund started with $175 million to support new ideas.

He also joined the board of directors at Amazon in 2024.

Teaching is one of his most important jobs. He is a professor at Stanford University. He helped start Coursera so people could take classes online for free. His courses are very popular on the internet. Over 8 million students have taken his online lessons. He wants to make sure everyone can learn about the future of technology.
