Andrew Ng

technology Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Andrew Yan-Tak Ng is a highly influential computer scientist and technology entrepreneur. He specializes in machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI). Machine learning is the study of how computers can learn from data. AI refers to machines performing tasks that usually require human intelligence. Ng has worked to "democratize deep learning." This means he wants to make these advanced tools available to everyone. His work spans academic research, major tech companies, and online education.

Ng's technical work often focuses on how machines process information. At Google, he cofounded the Google Brain project. This project used deep learning, which involves large artificial neural networks. These networks mimic how the human brain learns patterns. In one famous experiment, the team used 16,000 CPU cores. The system watched YouTube videos to learn about cats. It recognized cats without any human ever defining what a cat was.

Ng has also been a leader in changing how computers calculate. In 2008, his Stanford research group advocated using GPUs. A GPU, or graphics processing unit, is a type of computer chip. Using GPUs can speed up statistical model training by huge amounts. This helped solve scaling issues caused by big data. Later, he advocated for high-performance computing (HPC) to accelerate progress. These technical shifts have become cornerstones of modern AI development.

His education prepared him for these complex scientific challenges. He was born in London in 1976 to immigrant parents from Hong Kong. His family moved to Singapore in 1984. He earned a triple major from Carnegie Mellon University in 1997. He then received a master's degree from MIT. In 2002, he completed his Ph.D. at the University of California, Berkeley. His doctoral thesis focused on reinforcement learning, which is a way machines learn through trial and error.

Ng's career includes leadership roles at several global companies. He was the Chief Scientist at Baidu from 2014 to 2017. There, he led teams working on facial recognition. He also helped develop Melody, an AI chatbot for healthcare. In 2018, he launched the AI Fund. This fund initially had $175 million to support AI startups. Recently, his AI Fund invested in Jivi, a healthcare startup in India.

Education is a central part of Ng's mission. He is a professor at Stanford University. He also cofounded Coursera in 2012 with Daphne Koller. Coursera is a massive open online course (MOOC) platform. This platform allows millions of people to take university-level classes. Ng's own courses are among the most popular on the site. He has taught over 8 million students through his various online programs.

Ng also engages in important debates about the future of technology. He believes the real challenge is how AI affects human labor. He argues that academia and government must discuss this transition. Regarding regulation, Ng worries about rules that might hurt innovation. He has criticized bills that require "kill switches" for AI models. He believes such rules could create massive liabilities for scientists. His goal is to ensure AI benefits society while remaining safe.
