Sir Demis Hassabis is a prominent British researcher specializing in artificial intelligence (AI). He serves as the chief executive officer and co-founder of Google DeepMind and Isomorphic Labs. Beyond his corporate roles, he acts as a UK Government AI Adviser. His contributions to science reached a historic peak in 2024. That year, he and John M. Jumper were jointly awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. This honor recognized their groundbreaking AI research regarding protein structure prediction.

Hassabis's path to scientific leadership began with a deep interest in logic and games. Born in 1976, he was a child prodigy in the game of chess. By age 13, he had reached a master standard with an Elo rating of 2300. He used his chess winnings to fund his first computer, a ZX Spectrum 48K, in 1984. He taught himself programming using books and wrote his first AI program for a Commodore Amiga. This early interest in complex systems transitioned into a career in the video game industry. At age 17, he co-designed the simulation game Theme Park, which sold several million copies.

After working at companies like Bullfrog Productions and founding Elixir Studios, Hassabis pivoted toward neuroscience. He earned a PhD in cognitive neuroscience from the UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology in 2009. His research focused on how the human brain handles memory and imagination. He discovered a vital link between the hippocampus and these mental processes. Specifically, his work showed that patients with hippocampal damage struggled to imagine new experiences. This research suggested that the brain uses a "simulation engine" to plan for the future.

In 2010, Hassabis co-founded DeepMind with Shane Legg and Mustafa Suleyman. Their goal was to "solve intelligence" to help solve other global problems. They aimed to combine neuroscience with machine learning to create artificial general intelligence (AGI). This is a type of AI that can perform many different tasks. In 2014, Google purchased DeepMind for £400 million. Since then, the company has achieved several massive milestones in computer science and biology.

One major breakthrough involved mastering complex games. In 2013, DeepMind created a Deep Q-Network (DQN) that played Atari games at a superhuman level. Later, they developed AlphaGo to tackle the game of Go. This game is incredibly difficult for computers due to its vast number of possible positions. In 2016, AlphaGo defeated the world champion, Lee Sedol, with a score of 4–1. This victory proved that AI could master tasks previously thought impossible for machines.

Perhaps his most significant scientific achievement is AlphaFold. This tool addresses a 50-year challenge in biology: protein structure prediction. Proteins are essential to life, and their function depends on their 3D shape. AlphaFold predicts this shape from a simple 1D amino acid sequence. In 2020, AlphaFold 2 achieved a median global distance test (GDT) score of 87.0. This accuracy is so high that it is competitive with expensive experimental methods. DeepMind has since made the structures of 200 million proteins available to the world through a free database.

Despite these successes, Hassabis remains cautious about the future of technology. He views AI as a potentially beneficial tool for health and climate change. However, he warns of significant ethical risks and potential dangers if AI is misused. In 2023, he signed a statement calling for global priority on mitigating AI extinction risks. He believes we must develop rigorous tests to ensure AI models remain controllable. His work continues to bridge the gap between biological intelligence and machine learning.
