Zhang Yiming is a prominent Chinese internet entrepreneur.

He is most famous for founding the technology company ByteDance. Through this company, he developed highly successful digital platforms. These include the news aggregator Toutiao and the video-sharing app TikTok. TikTok is known as Douyin within China. Zhang has become one of the wealthiest individuals globally. According to Forbes, his net worth is estimated in the billions. In 2024, his success made him the richest person in China.

Zhang's success is built on a specific technological vision. In 2012, he believed smartphone users struggled to find information. He noticed that search engines like Baidu mixed results with undisclosed advertising. Zhang wanted to use artificial intelligence to solve this problem. Artificial intelligence is a way for computers to process data and make smart decisions. His goal was to use these systems to push relevant content directly to users. This process relies on recommendation algorithms that learn what a person likes.

Building ByteDance required overcoming many early obstacles. Most venture capitalists did not initially share Zhang's vision. He struggled to secure funding until the Susquehanna International Group agreed to invest. After the launch of Toutiao in August 2012, the app grew rapidly. Within two years, it had more than 13 million daily users. This success eventually convinced Sequoia Capital to join in. In 2014, Sequoia Capital led a US$100 million investment in the company.

Zhang's career began with a strong foundation in engineering. He was born on April 1, 1983, in Longyan, Fujian, China. He studied micro electronics engineering and software engineering at Nankai University. He earned a Bachelor of Engineering in computer engineering in 2005.

His early professional life included several different roles. He was the first engineer at the travel website Kuxun. He also spent time working at Microsoft. Later, he started his own real estate search business called 99fang.com in 2009.

ByteDance grew into a global powerhouse through strategic moves. Unlike other Chinese tech leaders, Zhang focused on international expansion. He insisted that the workplace app Lark target markets in America, Europe, and Japan. In September 2017, ByteDance launched TikTok for the international market. The app became an instant hit with millennials worldwide. To grow even further, ByteDance purchased Musical.ly in August 2018. This acquisition cost US$800 million and integrated the service into TikTok.

As the company grew, it faced various regulatory and legal challenges. In 2018, the National Radio and Television Administration shut down the app Neihan Duanzi. Zhang issued an apology and promised closer cooperation with the Chinese Communist Party. By late 2018, ByteDance was valued at US$75 billion. This made it more valuable than Uber, the world's most valuable privately held startup at that time. However, the company also faced scrutiny from the United States. In 2020, the U.S. Department of Justice described Zhang as a mouthpiece for the Chinese government in a legal filing. Additionally, a former employee filed a lawsuit in 2023 regarding alleged bribes.

Zhang's leadership style was unique within the Chinese business landscape. He modeled ByteDance after American tech companies like Google. He held bimonthly town hall meetings to communicate with staff. He also discouraged employees from using formal titles like "boss" or "CEO." This was a departure from standard Chinese business conventions. In May 2021, Zhang announced he would step down as CEO. He completed a leadership handover to Liang Rubo later that year. Despite stepping down, Zhang maintains over 50 percent of the voting rights at ByteDance.
