Amazon is currently the world's largest e-commerce and cloud computing company. It is also the largest Internet company by revenue. Bezos has played a major role in shaping modern digital commerce and infrastructure. His leadership helped transform a small startup into a global giant. His career spans finance, retail, technology, and aerospace engineering.

Bezos's journey began with a strong academic foundation. He was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in 1964.

After growing up in Texas and Florida, he attended Princeton University. He initially studied physics but later switched to electrical engineering and computer science. He graduated in 1986 with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering, summa cum laude. Before starting Amazon, he worked on Wall Street. He held various roles in fintech and hedge funds. By age 30, he was a senior vice-president at D. E. Shaw & Co.

The creation of Amazon followed a specific sequence of events. In 1994, Bezos noticed that web usage was growing by 2,300% every year.

He decided to start an online bookstore. During a road trip from New York City to Seattle, he and his wife, MacKenzie Scott, wrote the business plan. They founded the company on July 5, 1994. They initially operated out of a rented garage in Bellevue, Washington. Bezos chose the name Amazon because it starts with the letter A. This helped the company appear first in alphabetized website listings. He also liked the connection to the massive Amazon River.

Amazon has expanded through several distinct stages and types of service. It began strictly as an online bookstore. By 1998, it moved into music and video sales. In 2002, the company launched Amazon Web Services, or AWS. AWS provides cloud infrastructure and virtual assistant services to other businesses.

In 2007, the company launched the Kindle e-reader. This device was designed to create a "flow state" for readers. Today, the company also works in artificial intelligence and audio streaming.

Bezos has also invested heavily in aerospace and media. In 2000, he founded Blue Origin. This company focuses on aerospace manufacturing and sub-orbital spaceflight services.

In 2015, the New Shepard vehicle successfully reached space and landed back on Earth. Bezos himself flew to space on the NS-16 mission in 2021. In 2013, he purchased The Washington Post for $250 million. He also manages various investments through his venture capital firm, Bezos Expeditions. In 2021, he co-founded Altos Labs with Yuri Milner.

Bezos's financial history is marked by unprecedented growth. He was the first centibillionaire on the Forbes Real Time Billionaires Index. In July 2018, his net worth reached $150 billion.

This made him the wealthiest person in modern history at that time. By August 2020, his net worth exceeded $200 billion. As of December 2025, his estimated net worth is $239.4 billion. This makes him the fourth richest person in the world. He held the title of the world's wealthiest person from 2017 to 2021.

His career demonstrates how technology can connect different global industries. Amazon's cloud services support much of the modern internet. His aerospace work aims to advance space exploration. His media investments influence global news and communication. Even his early interest in physics shaped his approach to engineering and business. Bezos transitioned from CEO to executive chairman in July 2021. Andy Jassy, the former head of AWS, succeeded him as CEO. This transition marked a new chapter for the massive organization Bezos built.
