Timema are small, stout stick insects.

They live in the mountains of western North America. Most live in California. They eat many types of plants. Some eat oak or fir trees. Others eat shrubs found in chaparral.

These insects are masters of hiding. This is called crypsis. They use colors to match their homes. Some are green, gray, or brown. Many have a stripe on their back. This stripe helps them blend into thin, needle-like leaves. Other species do not have stripes. They might rest on tree trunks instead. Their brown or tan bodies match the bark.

Some Timema are very special. They use parthenogenesis. This means females can make eggs without a male. Five species do this. Two species have not used males for one million years! This is the longest time any insect has lived this way.

Females lay soft eggs. They even use bits of dirt to coat them. This may help protect the eggs. Ants sometimes find the eggs. They carry them away to their nests.
