Time travel is the idea of moving through time.

You could visit the past or the future. This concept appears in many different places. It is used in philosophy and in science fiction stories. Some people wonder if it is physically possible. Moving to the future is a known thing. Scientists see this happen through special relativity. However, we cannot make a body move much more than a few milliseconds.

How does this work in science? Forward time travel happens through time dilation. This means time moves at different speeds for different things. You might see a clock slow down if it moves very fast. Scientists also study wormholes to understand time. A wormhole is a bridge through space and time. One end could be moved very quickly through space. This would make that end age less than the other end.

Many old stories feature people leaping through time. In Hindu mythology, Raivata Kakudmi visits the god Brahma. When he returns to Earth, many ages have passed. A Japanese legend tells of a fisherman named Urashima Tarō. He visits an undersea palace for only three days. When he returns, centuries have passed in his world.

The Quran also tells of the Seven Sleepers. These young men slept in a cave for centuries. They awoke to find a changed world.

Science fiction writers love to use time machines.

H. G. Wells made this idea famous in 1895. His book was called The Time Machine. Before him, Edward Page Mitchell wrote about a backward clock in 1881. Enrique Gaspar y Rimbau wrote about a time vessel in 1887. Some stories use sleep to move through time. In 1819, Washington Irving wrote about Rip Van Winkle. He slept for many years and woke to a new society.

Time travel connects to many things we know. We see it in movies and in books. Scientists use math to study if it can happen. They look at the rules of general relativity. This theory helps explain how space and time are linked. Some scientists worry about the grandfather paradox. This is a problem where a traveler changes the past. This could stop their own ancestors from being born. Scientists like Stephen Hawking have studied these big questions.
