This happens because the Moon and Sun pull on Earth. The water moves in a very regular way. Because of this, we can predict the tides. This makes tidal power a reliable way to make electricity.

There are different ways to catch this power. One way uses tidal stream generators. These work like wind turbines. They use the movement of the water to spin.

Another way uses tidal barrages. These are dams built across a river mouth. When the tide comes in, water fills a basin behind the dam. As the tide goes out, the water flows through turbines. This makes electricity.

People have used water power for a long time. In the Middle Ages, tide mills turned wheels to grind grain. Today, we build much bigger stations. The Rance Tidal Power Station in France was the first large one. It opened in 1966. Now, the Sihwa Lake Tidal Power Station in South Korea is the largest. It uses ten turbines to make 254 MW of power.
