geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Three Gorges are three beautiful gaps in the mountains. They sit along the middle part of the Yangtze River. These gaps are in the People's Republic of China. The Three Gorges include the Qutang, Wu, and Xiling gorges. They stretch from Baidicheng in Chongqing to Yichang in Hubei Province.

This area is very famous for its scenery. It is also a very important place for Chinese history and culture.

Nature shaped these valleys in different ways. Some parts of the gorges are very narrow. Other parts are much wider. This happens because of the different types of rock. Hard limestone makes narrow gaps because it resists erosion. Water flows through cracks in the limestone and wears it away. This creates steep cliffs. Softer rocks like sandstone make wide valleys because they wear away more easily.

People have admired these views for hundreds of years. Long ago, writers described the tall mountains and deep water. The mountains are so close together that they block the sun. You might only see the sun at noon. In the summer, the water rises very high. This can make it hard for boats to move. Some people say you can hear monkeys howling from the peaks.

Moving through the gorges was a hard job in the past. For a long time, people had to pull boats by hand. It was a dangerous path with swift currents. In the 1900s, people began to talk about building a dam. The Three Gorges Dam was finally built at Sandouping in Yichang. Construction on the dam finished by the end of 2008. A special ship lift was also finished in 2015.

The big dam changed the whole region. It created a huge reservoir of water. Now the river is much wider and deeper. This helps very large ships carry cargo through the area. However, the high water also covered many old towns. Some special sites, like the Baiheliang markers, are now underwater. Other places, like the Shibaozhai fortress, were saved with special walls. The mountains now look lower because the river is so wide.
