The mountains are very tall and steep. Some parts of the gorges are narrow. Other parts are wide. This happens because of the rocks. Hard limestone makes narrow gaps. Softer rocks like sandstone make wide valleys. People say you can hear monkeys howling in the hills.

A very big dam was built at Yichang. This is the Three Gorges Dam. It was finished in 2008. The dam holds back a huge amount of water. This created a large reservoir. The river is now much wider and deeper. This helps very large ships move through the area. The water level has changed the view. The mountains now look lower next to the wide river. Many old towns and sites are now under the water. Some places, like Shibaozhai, were saved with special walls.
