Most of his art was made with oil paints on canvas. He often painted big, moody landscapes that felt very emotional. These paintings sometimes showed a quiet, beautiful version of the New World. He wanted to show nature as a peaceful place. This was different from the smoky cities of the Industrial Revolution in Britain.

Cole had a special way of making his art. He liked to sketch things he saw in nature first. Later, he would turn those sketches into a finished painting.

He also made allegorical paintings, which are works that tell a story through symbols. One famous set is called The Course of Empire. It uses five paintings to show a landscape changing through many years. It moves from a state of nature to a great empire, and then to ruins.

Cole was born in England on February 1, 1801. His family moved to the United States in 1818. They first lived in Steubenville, Ohio. Later, he moved to Philadelphia and then to Catskill, New York. He lived in Catskill with his wife, Maria, and their five children. He kept a studio at a farm called Cedar Grove.

He worked there for many years until he died in 1848.

Many important people helped Cole become a great artist. A man named George W. Bruen paid for a trip to the Hudson Valley. This trip helped Cole paint famous places like Kaaterskill Falls. Another artist named John Trumbull saw Cole's work and helped him meet wealthy supporters. These supporters were called patrons. Cole also showed eighty-nine of his paintings at the National Academy of Design. He even entered a contest to design the Ohio Statehouse in 1838. He won third place in that competition.

Cole's work changed how people saw the American landscape. He even traveled to Europe to study older styles of art. In Italy, he was amazed by a huge volcano called Mount Etna. He made at least six paintings of this volcano.

His influence lived on through other artists like Frederic Edwin Church. Today, people can visit his home, the Thomas Cole House. It is a National Historic Site. Even a mountain in the Catskills is named Thomas Cole Mountain to honor him.
