John Constable was a famous English painter from the Romantic tradition. He is best known for changing how people paint landscapes, which are pictures of the land. He felt a deep love for the area near his home. This place is called the Dedham Vale. It sits on the border of Suffolk and Essex. People now call this area "Constable Country" because of his art.

Constable loved many small details in nature. He loved the sound of water escaping from mill dams. He liked looking at willow trees and old, rotten planks. He even found beauty in slimy posts and brickwork. He went on sketching trips to the countryside to find these things. These trips helped him create the subjects for his large canvases.

Constable was born in East Bergholt in 1776. His father, Golding Constable, was a wealthy corn merchant. Golding owned Flatford Mill and later Dedham Mill in Essex. He even owned a small ship called The Telegraph. John originally worked in the corn business after school. In 1799, he persuaded his father to let him study art.

To become a professional, Constable studied at the Royal Academy Schools. He attended life classes and studied how bodies are shaped. He also spent time copying the work of "old masters." These were famous artists from the past. He was inspired by artists like Claude Lorrain and Thomas Gainsborough. In 1803, he began showing his own paintings at the Royal Academy.

Constable’s life included both hard work and great love. He married Maria Bicknell in 1816 after a long friendship. They had a deep and mutual love for each other. While traveling on his honeymoon, he learned new ways to use bright colors. He also began painting much larger works to get more attention. His famous painting, The Hay Wain, was finished in 1821.
