Theodosius Dobzhansky was a famous scientist. He studied genetics, which is the study of how traits pass from parents to children. He was also an evolutionary biologist. This means he studied how living things change over long periods of time.

Dobzhansky was born in the Russian Empire in 1900. As a boy, he liked to collect butterflies. Later, he studied beetles and tiny flies called Drosophila. He moved to the United States in 1927. In America, he helped connect two big ideas. He joined genetics with the study of evolution. This helped create what scientists call the modern synthesis.

He wrote a very important book in 1937. It was called Genetics and the Origin of Species. This book explained how small changes in genes can lead to big changes in life. He also wrote a famous essay. It said that biology only makes sense when we look at evolution.

Dobzhansky believed that all humans are part of one big family. He wanted to use science to fight unfair ideas about people. He worked hard as a teacher until he died in 1975.
