He was an expert on birds. He was also a taxonomist. This is a person who names and groups living things. During his life, he named 38 new kinds of birds. He also found 38 new kinds of orchids.

Mayr wanted to solve a big mystery. He wanted to know how one kind of animal becomes a new kind. He came up with a new way to define a species. A species is a group of animals that can breed only with each other. They cannot breed with other groups.

He found that groups can change if they are separated. This might happen because of mountains or oceans. Sometimes, a small group lives on an island. These small groups change very fast. This can lead to the birth of a new species. This idea is called peripatric speciation. It is a way that new species form.

Mayr worked at big museums in Germany and America. He even taught at Harvard University. He wrote many books and articles about nature. He lived to be 100 years old.
