Sometimes a tiny group moves to a new home.

They leave their old group behind. These few travelers carry only some traits. This is called the founder effect.

Because the group is small, they do not have all the traits of the big group. This is like picking a few colored beads from a large jar. You might only pick red beads. Now, the new group will mostly be red. This happens by chance.

In the new group, some traits can become very common. Other traits might disappear forever. This is a type of genetic drift. Genetic drift is when traits change by luck. Over many years, the new group can look very different. They might even become a new species.

This happens in nature and in humans. For example, people moved out of Africa long ago. These moves created many different human groups. Small groups can also face more health risks. This is because they share many of the same genes.
