They are known as a "proto-punk" group. This means they helped start the punk rock sound. Their music felt raw and very loud. People remember them for their wild energy. They changed how musicians act on stage. Many people think their style was totally unique.

Performing with the band was a wild experience. The singer, Iggy Pop, was very bold. He often jumped into the crowd of fans. Some say he helped start stage diving. He sometimes used peanut butter on his chest. He even used hamburger meat during shows. These acts were very loud and messy.

The music often had a trance-like sound. It felt like a heavy, driving beat. This helped create a very intense feeling.

The band started in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Iggy Pop formed the group in 1967. He wanted to make a new kind of blues. He was inspired by seeing the band The Doors. He also saw an all-girls band called Untouchable. The original members were Iggy Pop, Ron Asheton, Scott Asheton, and Dave Alexander. They played their first show on Halloween night. Their early shows were at the Grande Ballroom.

Over the years, the band changed many times. They released their first album in 1969. Their second album, Fun House, came out in 1970. This album added a saxophone player named Steve Mackay. They released Raw Power in 1973. This third album was very influential for later bands. The group broke up in 1974. They later reunited in 2003 with a new lineup. This new group included Mike Watt on bass.

Even after they stopped playing, their fame grew. The Stooges were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010. In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine ranked them very high. They were number 78 on a list of great artists. They also won a Mojo Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007.
