In 1976, a scientist named Richard Dawkins published a famous book called The Selfish Gene.

This book explores a special way to look at evolution. Evolution is the way living things change over very long periods. Instead of looking at whole animals, Dawkins looks at the tiny genes inside them. He uses the word "selfish" as a metaphor, which is a way of describing something using a comparison. This does not mean genes have feelings or want things. It means the focus of evolution is on how genes pass themselves on to the next generation. The book helps us understand why living things behave the way they do.

To understand this view, we have to look at how life works step by step. Long ago, the first replicators appeared in a primordial soup. A replicator is a molecule, like DNA or RNA, that can make copies of itself. As these molecules became more complex, they formed cells. These cells eventually joined together to create bodies. Dawkins calls these bodies "survival machines" for the genes. The genes stay safe inside the body while they wait to be passed on. This process ensures that the instructions for life continue through time.

Dawkins did not invent these ideas all by himself. He built his work on ideas from other smart scientists. He used the work of George C. Williams, who wrote about natural selection in 1966. He also used ideas from W. D. Hamilton about kin selection. Kin selection is a way to explain why animals help their relatives. Hamilton showed that helping a relative helps the gene survive. This is because relatives share many of the same genes. By helping a brother or a cousin, a gene helps more copies of itself stay in the world.

There are many interesting facts and numbers found in the study of genes. For example, Dawkins discusses how certain animals have specific ratios in their groups. In some cases, like elephant seals, 4% of males might get 88% of the mating opportunities. He also talks about how many years living things existed before Charles Darwin discovered evolution. Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace found the mechanism of natural selection. The book even introduced a new word called a "meme." A meme is a unit of culture that spreads from person to person, much like a gene spreads in a body.

This way of thinking connects to many things you might already know. You might see a bird protecting its nest or an ant helping its queen. These are examples of altruism, which is when one living thing helps another. Even though it looks like the animal is being unselfish, the gene is actually working to survive. It is like a road that carries travelers from one place to another. The body is the road, but the gene is the traveler moving forward. This helps us see the hidden patterns in the natural world around us.
