The Kiss (Hayez)

arts Maturity 5-7 Next article →

*The Kiss* is a famous painting by the Italian artist Francesco Hayez. He finished this oil painting in 1859. It is a very important piece of Italian Romanticism. This style of art focuses on deep feelings rather than just logic. Many people see the painting as a symbol of the Risorgimento. This was the movement to unite Italy into one nation. The painting shows a man and a woman from the Middle Ages. They are locked in a very passionate and intense embrace.

Hayez used clever ways to show his ideas without getting in trouble. At that time, leaders might punish people for secret political ideas. To avoid this, the artist used metaphors. A metaphor is a way to show one thing by talking about another. The painting looks like a simple scene from the past. However, it actually hides messages about the struggle for Italian freedom. The man has his foot on a step. This makes it look like he is ready to leave at any moment. He might be a soldier going to fight for his country.

The history of this work involves many important people. Count Alfonso Maria Visconti di Saliceto first asked Hayez to paint it. He wanted the art to show hope for an alliance between France and the Kingdom of Sardinia. The Count kept the painting in his home for over 25 years. He later gave it to the Pinacoteca di Brera museum in 1886. This museum is located in Milan. The painting is still on display there today in Room XXXVII.

Hayez actually created three different versions of this famous scene. The most famous one is the oil painting in the Brera museum. A second version was painted in 1861 for the Mylius family. In that version, the woman's dress is white instead of blue. This white color honored the new Kingdom of Italy. A third version is unique because it is a watercolor on paper. It was made in 1859 and given to Carolina Zucchi. This version is now kept at the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana in Milan.

Colors in the painting carry very special meanings. In the original, the blue dress and red tights match the French flag. This was a tribute to France, which was an ally to Italy. In other versions, the man wears a green cloak. Green is a color from the Italian flag. The painting has stayed popular for a very long time. In the 1920s, a chocolate company used the image for "Baci" chocolate boxes. Even famous movie directors have used it for inspiration.
