Hayez learned to paint through many different steps. He started as a child in a studio in Venice. He studied the Neoclassical style, which uses clear shapes. He even learned how to make prints using a method called lithography. This helped him share his art with more people.

His journey began in a poor family in Venice. His father, Giovanni, was a fisherman from France. His mother, Chiara, was from Murano. As a young boy, Hayez loved to draw. He studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia. In 1809, he won a scholarship to study in Rome.

He traveled through many cities like Florence and Bologna to get there. This long journey helped him meet many other famous artists.

Hayez had many successes and some hard moments. In 1812, he tied for first prize with a painting called Laokoon. He also won a big competition in Rome with his work Triumphant Athlete.

However, he sometimes changed his mind or worked slowly. This caused him to lose a job painting in the Vatican Museums. Later, his painting Pietro Rossi made him famous in Milan. He became a very successful teacher at the Brera Academy in 1823.

His art connects to many things we know today. Many of his paintings feel like scenes from a movie or an opera. He was a friend of the composer Giuseppe Verdi.
