The term gospel refers to a theological concept of "good news."

It appears in several different religions and historical cultures. The word comes from the Koine Greek term *euangelion*. This term is made of *eu*, meaning good, and *angelion*, meaning news. In its earliest uses, it described a reward paid to a messenger. It also described a religious offering of thanks for good fortune. Today, the word carries deep spiritual meaning for many people around the world.

In Ancient Greek religion, the concept was used for specific rituals. The word *euangelia* referred to sacrifices offered for good tidings. These offerings could take many forms. People offered food, drink, or animal sacrifices to thank the gods.

Military victories were often celebrated with these special offerings. A play by Aristophanes from 424 BCE even mentions a character suggesting a huge sacrifice of one hundred heifers to the goddess Athena. This shows how important the concept of giving thanks for news was to the Greeks.

The Roman Imperial cult also adopted this concept toward the end of the 1st century BCE. They used the term to celebrate the divine status of the emperor Augustus. Augustus was seen as a savior who brought peace to the Roman world. This era of stability is known as the *Pax Romana*.

One famous example is the Calendar Inscription of Priene from 9 BCE. This inscription shows the city of Priene planned to start its calendar on Augustus's birthday. This was done to celebrate the "good news" of his birth. This practice of dedicating calendars to a divine ruler eventually influenced the Julian and Gregorian calendars.

In Christianity, the gospel is the central message regarding Jesus Christ. It describes his life, teachings, and his role as a savior. The first four books of the New Testament are called the canonical Gospels. These are the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.

Christian theology often views this message as a fulfillment of older promises. Some thinkers point to Genesis 3:14–15 as the "Proto-Gospel." This refers to an early promise of salvation found in the Hebrew scripture. The Apostle Paul also described the gospel as the power of God that brings salvation to all who believe.

Different Christian movements interpret the gospel in various ways. Liberation theology is one such perspective. Developed by theologians like Leonardo Boff and Gustavo Gutiérrez, it emphasizes Jesus's role in freeing the poor and oppressed. Another approach is the Christian missions movement. This movement believes the good news is a message for every nation, tribe, and culture.

They see the church as a way to reconcile the world to God. Some even view the gospel as a cosmic force that defeats evil through the death and resurrection of Jesus.

Islam also holds a significant concept known as the *Injīl*. This term is derived from the same Greek root as the word gospel. In the Quran, the *Injīl* is described as a divine revelation given to ʿĪsā, who is known as Jesus.

Muslims regard the *Injīl* as one of the four major revealed books. It is listed alongside the Torah, the Zabur, and the Quran. The Quran states that the *Injīl* contains guidance and light. It also serves to confirm the previous revelation of the Torah.

There are different scholarly views regarding the history of the *Injīl*. Mainstream Sunni and Shia doctrine affirms that the original revelation was genuine. However, many scholars discuss the concept of *taḥrīf*, or alteration. Some believe the *Injīl* was recorded by followers and later changed by editors. Others suggest the original revelation was oral and later reflected in Christian writings. These ideas are central to modern Muslim-Christian dialogue. Scholars use these comparisons to study how different religions view revelation and scriptural authority.
