The Ten Great Campaigns were a series of military actions. They happened during the rule of the Qianlong Emperor. He ruled the Qing dynasty in China from 1735 to 1796. These campaigns helped change the borders of his empire. Some were meant to gain new lands in Inner Asia. Others were to manage areas the empire already ruled.

Three campaigns focused on expanding control in Inner Asia. The most significant was the fight against the Dzungars. This began when a leader named Dawachi defeated a prince named Amursana. Amursana fled to the Qing court for help. In 1755, General Zhaohui led an army against the Dzungars. He forced Dawachi to surrender near the river Ili. Later, Amursana started a revolt against the Qing. Zhaohui fought him in many battles, like the Battle of Oroi-Jalatu.

Another major part of these campaigns involved the Altishahr Khojas. Two brothers, Burhān al-Dīn and Khwāja-i Jahān, started a revolt in 1757. They were joined by Kyrgyz and Uyghur peoples. General Zhaohui fought them in several difficult battles. One important fight was the Battle of Qurman in 1759. At this battle, 600 relief troops faced 5,000 enemy cavalry. The Qing used artillery camels and muskets to win. After this, the rebels fled to Badakhshan and were captured.

Some campaigns were much harder and cost more money. The wars in Jinchuan were very destructive. The Gyalrong tribes lived in stone towers in steep mountains. The Qing had to use cannon fire to reach them. Other wars happened in Burma between 1765 and 1769. These four invasions were very difficult for the Qing. Many soldiers died from fighting and tropical diseases. The Burmese defense helped set the modern border between Myanmar and China.

The Emperor also dealt with revolts in other places. In 1786, a group called the Tiandihui rebelled in Taiwan. Their leader was Lin Shuangwen. A general named Fuk'anggan used 20,000 soldiers to stop them. Finally, there were two campaigns against the Gurkhas. These took place between 1788 and 1793. All these events show how the Qing dynasty managed its huge lands. They shaped the maps of Asia that we see today.
