They cover 25% of the world's forest area. This is the second largest biome on land. A biome is a large area with its own weather and life. These forests wrap around the planet like a belt.

There are many different types of these forests.

Deciduous forests have trees with wide leaves. Maple and oak are common trees here. These trees shed all their leaves during one season. Coniferous forests are different. They have needle-leaved trees like pine or fir. These are often evergreen, which means they stay green all year. These trees can live in harsh places. Mixed forests have both types of trees growing together. You might see ash, birch, or elm trees there.

Some areas are very wet and rainy. We call these temperate rainforests. They are quite rare today. Many of them were cut down long ago. Most people live in these middle parts of the world. People have cut forests to build big cities. They also use the land for farming. This can lead to habitat loss for animals.
