Finding these fossils provides important data about prehistoric life. For example, researchers have studied very complete skeletons to understand their anatomy. They estimate that Temnodontosaurus had more than 40 presacral vertebrae. This refers to the bones in the spine located before the sacrum. The scale of these animals is truly massive. While not as large as some Triassic forms, they were still giants of the sea. Even a single tooth can provide clues about their diet and biology. In 1960, it was noted that the original holotype tooth for the species was lost.
Because of this loss, scientists had to designate a new specimen. They chose NHMUK PV OR 2003* as the neotype for Temnodontosaurus platyodon. This specimen was also discovered by Mary Anning in 1832. She sold it to Thomas Hawkins, who later sold it to the museum for £210. Studying these fossils helps us understand how marine reptiles evolved. It also shows how much we can learn from the fossil record. New studies, like those in 2023, continue to re-evaluate how these species are classified. The study of Temnodontosaurus remains a vital part of paleontology.
