Television comedy is a special way of broadcasting that makes people laugh. It has been a part of media since the very early days.

Some of the first shows were variety shows. One famous example was the Texaco Star Theater in the United States. This show featured Milton Berle from 1948 to 1956. Today, comedy has grown into many different styles. We see sitcoms, stand-up, and even funny news. These shows help viewers relate to the world around them. They can even help introduce new ways of thinking to society.

One of the most common types is the situation comedy, or sitcom.

These shows use the same characters in funny situations. The very first sitcom was a U.K. show called Pinwright's Progress. It aired ten episodes between November 1946 and May 1947. Later, shows like I Love Lucy became very popular. I Love Lucy topped the viewing charts for four out of its six years on air. Sitcoms are usually about thirty minutes long. They often use a laugh track to show audience laughter. Some even use a setup with multiple cameras to film.

Some comedy is made up right on the spot. This is called improvisational comedy, or improv. In these shows, actors create their dialogue while they act. This style is popular in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia. The show Whose Line is it Anyway? was started in 1988. It was created by The Comedy Store Players in London. It began in the U.K. before moving to the U.S. Some sitcoms also use improv to make scenes funnier. For example, actors on Curb Your Enthusiasm often made up their own lines.

Comedy can also be found in the news or in stand-up. News comedy uses jokes to summarize true events. This is a common way for young adults to learn about politics. The Daily Show is a famous example of this. When Jon Stewart hosted in 1999, the show became very well known. During the 2000 U.S. election, 435,000 young adults watched his coverage. Stand-up comedy is when a person tells jokes alone. In the U.S., these shows became popular on cable in the mid-1980s. Some were even called "brick wall" shows because of their simple backdrops.

Television comedy can change how we see social norms. It often introduces ideas that do not match old traditions. For instance, I Love Lucy was the first sitcom with a multilingual couple. Lucy spoke English, while Ricky spoke Spanish. Other shows have helped change how we view relationships. Some shows have introduced same-sex intimacy to the screen. The show Ellen made a big impact when the main character came out. Comedy can also mix funny parts with serious drama. These are called comedy-dramas, like the medical show M*A*S*H. They help people feel a sense of togetherness through laughter.
