A variety show is a special kind of entertainment. It features many different acts in one program. You might see musical performances or magic tricks. You could also see comedy sketches, acrobatics, or juggling. Sometimes, a performer uses ventriloquism to make a puppet talk. A host called a compère leads the entire show. They introduce each new act to the audience.

These shows follow a specific way of working. The host keeps the show moving from one act to the next. In the past, radio variety shows were very popular. They often had a house band and a singer. A host would also tell a short monologue or a joke. They might even perform a short comedy sketch. These comedy sketches with recurring characters eventually turned into sitcoms.
