Television comedy is a diverse category of broadcasting designed to entertain through humor. Since the early days of media, it has evolved from simple variety shows into many complex genres. These programs allow viewers to relate content to their own lives and society. Comedy can even act as a medium for introducing new social norms and transitions.

By using humor, television creates a collective sense of enjoyment among audiences across different societies.

One of the most prominent genres is the situation comedy, commonly known as a sitcom. These programs feature recurring characters placed in various humorous situations. The first television sitcom was a U.K. program titled Pinwright's Progress. It aired ten episodes bi-weekly from November 1946 to May 1947. Later, shows like I Love Lucy became major successes in the United States. I Love Lucy topped the Nielsen audience ratings in four out of its six years on the air. Most sitcoms are a half-hour in length and may use a multiple-camera setup for filming. They often use a laugh track or a live audience to portray comedic moments.

Improvisational comedy, or improv, involves actors creating dialogue while they are acting. This genre has a strong history in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia. Many programs that began on the radio eventually transferred to television. The show Whose Line is it Anyway? was created in 1988 by The Comedy Store Players in London. It began broadcasting in the U.K. before expanding to the United States. Some sitcoms also incorporate improv into their production. For example, the actors on Curb Your Enthusiasm used general episode summaries but created their own lines in front of the camera.

News comedy brings humor into stories reported on mainstream news. This genre often uses mostly-fictional jokes to summarize true events. It is a frequent way for young adults to learn about political news. The Daily Show is a well-known example that gained prominence when Jon Stewart began hosting in 1999. During the 2000 U.S. presidential election, 435,000 young adults viewed Stewart's coverage. This was compared to 459,000 viewers who watched traditional news. While these shows use satire, journalists note they still broadcast real news to ensure viewers gain knowledge.

Stand-up comedy is another major form where comedians perform alone. These performers have traditionally been staples of variety and late-night talk shows. For instance, The Tonight Show often begins with a comedy monologue from the host. In the U.K., the program The Comedians saw a peak in popularity. However, a new generation of performers introduced alternative comedy in the early 1980s. They challenged older styles that they viewed as racist or sexist. In the United States, stand-up became popular on cable channels in the mid-1980s. These were sometimes called "brick wall" shows because they used a fake brick wall as a backdrop.

Other specialized genres include sketch comedy and comedy-drama. Sketch comedy differs from sitcoms because it does not rely on recurring characters. Instead, it often uses satire and current events. Sid Caesar pioneered this genre with Your Show of Shows in 1950. In the U.K., Monty Python's Flying Circus is a successful example. Comedy-dramas combine humor with serious dramatic elements for a more realistic tone. These are typically one hour in length and use a single-camera setup without a laugh track. Examples include medical dramas like M*A*S*H or musical comedy dramas like Glee.

Television comedy has also played a significant role in changing social norms. It has introduced concepts that did not always align with existing traditions. I Love Lucy was the first sitcom to feature a multilingual couple. Lucy spoke English, while Ricky spoke Spanish. Comedy has also introduced same-sex intimacy to the screen. The show Ellen made a major impact when the main character came out as a lesbian. This caused ratings to change to TV-14, which included a mature content warning. These shifts show how comedy can influence how society views relationships and identity.
