He lived during the late Meiji, Taishō, and early Shōwa eras. Yosano was a leader who wanted to change Japanese literature. He believed that traditional poetry needed more originality. His goal was to make poetry more popular among people. He worked to revitalize various forms of Japanese verse.

Yosano used several different poetic structures to express his ideas. One major form was tanka, which is a traditional short poem. He also wrote shintaishi, which are new-style poems. In 1910, he published a collection titled Kasi no ha. This collection included his first Gogyōshi work, named Syōkyoku. Gogyōshi is a style of poetry written in exactly five lines. He also wrote essays, including a piece titled 5 Pairs of Shoes.

Yosano's professional life began with teaching and newspaper work. He was born in Kyoto as the son of a Buddhist priest. After graduating from Keio University, he taught Japanese language. He taught for four years at Tokuyama Girls' School. This school is located in what is now Shunan city in Yamaguchi prefecture. He had to leave that teaching position due to alleged improprieties with a student. At age 20, he moved to Tokyo to find new work.

In Tokyo, Yosano worked as a staff writer for newspapers. This role helped him support himself while he developed his literary voice. On May 11, 1894, he published a very strong article. This article argued for the reform of waka, which is traditional Japanese poetry. He wanted waka to have more original qualities. He believed this change would help the art form survive and thrive.

As a literary leader, Yosano founded important groups and publications. He was a disciple of Ochiai Naobumi. He also became a founding member of the Asaka Society. In 1900, Yosano started a magazine called Myōjō, which means Bright Star. This magazine became a major hub for young poets. It helped create a circle of famous literary figures. These included poets such as Kitahara Hakushū, Yoshii Isamu, and Ishikawa Takuboku.

Yosano's personal life was closely linked to the world of literature. His wife was the fellow author Yosano Akiko. Before her marriage to Tekkan, she was known by the name Hō Shō. They were both important figures in the Japanese writing community. Their family influence continued into the next generation. Their grandson, Kaoru Yosano, grew up to be a politician. This shows how his legacy reached into different parts of Japanese society.

Yosano's published works show the variety of his interests. He wrote a collection of literary criticism called Bokoku no on in 1894. This title translates to Sounds of a Decaying Country. In 1896, he published an anthology of poetry called Tōzai namboku. This work included tanka, shintaishi, and renga. Renga is a form of linked verse. These works helped establish his reputation as a serious thinker and creator.
