He was a highly skilled poet and a talented painter. Historians consider him one of the greatest poets of his era. He belongs to a group of legendary poets alongside Matsuo Bashō and Kobayashi Issa. Buson was not just a writer of words. He also worked with haibun, which is a style mixing prose and poetry. He was a key figure in completing haiga. Haiga is an art style that combines painting with haiku poetry.

Buson's creative process involved several distinct artistic methods. He experimented with a mixed Chinese-Japanese style of poetry. This allowed him to blend different linguistic traditions. He also used haiga to create a visual and verbal experience. Between 1754 and 1757, he worked on a collection of haiga-style picture scrolls. These are known as the Buson yōkai emaki. These scrolls use art to tell stories or show themes. He also focused on natural imagery in his writing. His poems often captured small, specific details of the world. For example, he wrote about the cold remaining in nooks near plum flowers. He also described the deep colors of morning glory petals.

There were many different parts to Buson's artistic life. He was a professional painter who used his skill to earn an income. Because he needed to make money, he could not always approach painting as freely as he did poetry. His poetry followed a different path. He believed that poems should be natural. He did not want to follow strict rules or guidelines. Instead, he valued an individual style. This was different from the modern trends of his time. Because of this, some people thought his poetry was outdated. However, his paintings were very widely accepted by the public during his lifetime.

Buson's life began in the village of Kema in Settsu Province. This area is now part of the Miyakojima Ward in Osaka. His birth name was Taniguchi. Some oral traditions suggest he was the son of a servant woman named Gen. Gen came from a place called Yosa in Tango Province. This connection later influenced his professional name. Around age 20, Buson moved to Edo, which is modern-day Tokyo. He began his formal training in poetry there. He studied under a haikai master named Hayano Hajin. Hajin taught at a house called Yahantei, or the Midnight Pavilion.

Travel played a massive role in shaping Buson's identity. He deeply admired the poet Matsuo Bashō. Buson traveled through the wilds of northern Honshū to follow Bashō's path. He visited the same areas that inspired Bashō's famous diary, Oku no Hosomichi. In 1744, Buson published his own travel notes from this journey. This publication was significant because it was the first time he used the name Buson. He traveled through many provinces, including Tango and Sanuki. At age 42, he settled in the city of Kyoto. It was during this time that he began writing as Yosa. He took this name from his mother's birthplace.

Buson's later years were spent teaching and refining his craft. He married at age 45 and had a daughter named Kuno. Later, he lived in Kyoto and taught poetry at a place called the Sumiya. He used certain poets as models for his students. He specifically pointed to four of Bashō's disciples: Kikaku, Kyorai, Ransetsu, and Sodō. In 1770, he adopted the pen name Yahantei II. This was a way to honor his teacher, Hajin. Buson lived to be 68 years old. While some thought he died of severe diarrhea, recent investigations suggest he died of a myocardial infarction, which is a heart attack.

Today, the legacy of Yosa Buson is preserved in major institutions globally. His work is not just a local treasure but a global one. You can find his art in the British Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Seattle Art Museum and the Harvard Art Museums also hold his pieces. Other important collections include the Kimbell Art Museum and the Worcester Art Museum. The University of Michigan Museum of Art also keeps his work. His ability to bridge the worlds of visual art and poetry continues to fascinate scholars and art lovers alike.
