Queen Isabella II finally opened the doors on 19 November 1850. She attended a performance of an opera called "La favorite." For many years, the world's most famous singers performed on this stage. In 1863, the famous composer Giuseppe Verdi even visited the theatre.

The building has faced many hard jobs over the years. In 1925, the theatre had to close because of damage from the Madrid Metro. It later reopened in 1966 as a place for symphonic music.

Later, a big project began in 1991 to fix the building. This renovation helped it become an opera house once again. It officially reopened as an opera house on 11 October 1997. Since 1998, the Orquesta Sinfónica de Madrid has been the main orchestra here.

The Teatro Real is more than just a place for opera. It is a center for many different kinds of big events. In 1969, it hosted the 14th Eurovision Song Contest.
