A taxon is a group of living things. It can be one kind of animal. It can also be many kinds. These groups share things in common. This helps them stand out from other groups.

Each taxon often has a name. It also has a rank. A rank shows how big the group is. Some ranks are very large. Other ranks are very small. For example, a group can be a genus. A genus is a type of group that includes close relatives.

Some scientists like to use a clade. A clade is a group that shows how life changed over time. It includes a common ancestor and all its descendants. This is also called a monophyletic group.

Other groups are called paraphyletic. This means they do not include all the descendants. The group of reptiles, or Reptilia, is one example. Birds and mammals come from reptile ancestors. But birds and mammals are not put in the reptile group. Instead, birds are in a group called Aves. Mammals are in a group called Mammalia.
