Scientists use special groups to study the many living things on Earth. One of these groups is called a taxon.

A taxon is a group of one or more populations of organisms. These living things form a single biological unit. Scientists who study these groups are called taxonomists. They look for traits that the living things share. These shared traits help set one group apart from others.

There are different ways to build these groups. One way is to use a system of ranks. Ranks tell us how big or small a group is. For example, a group might be a genus or a family.

Some scientists prefer to use a method called cladistics. This method focuses on evolutionary relationships. They look for a clade. A clade is a group that includes a common ancestor and all its descendants. This is also called a monophyletic group.

People have tried to group living things for a very long time. Hunter-gatherers in prehistoric times likely made their own simple groups. Later, thinkers like Aristotle shared ideas about life. In 1758, Carl Linnaeus published his famous work, Systema Naturae.

In 1805, Augustin Pyramus de Candolle helped make biological classification widely known. He wrote about a natural way to classify plants. Since then, scientists have worked together to organize all life on our planet.

Different names are used for different types of life. The term taxon was first used for animals in 1926 by Adolf Meyer-Abich. For plants, the word was proposed by Herman Johannes Lam in 1948. It was officially adopted in 1950 at a big botanical congress.

Scientists follow strict rules called nomenclature codes. The International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN) governs animal names. There are also codes for algae, fungi, and plants. These rules make sure every group has the correct scientific name.

Sometimes, old groups do not match the new science of evolution. A famous example is the class Reptilia, or the reptiles. Many reptiles are related to birds and mammals. However, birds are placed in the class Aves. Mammals are placed in the class Mammalia.

This means the reptile group is paraphyletic. This word describes a group that does not include all descendants. Scientists are still finding new ways to name life as they learn more.
