He ruled a land between two rivers. These were the Indus and the Jhelum rivers. This area is in the Punjab region. Most people think his real name was Ambhi. Greek writers called him Taxiles instead. They used the name of his capital city, Taxila. This city is near modern Attock in Pakistan.

Ambhi had a very hard job. He had a neighbor named Porus. Porus ruled the land east of the Jhelum River. Ambhi and Porus were not on good terms. Ambhi wanted to stay safe from his foe. He decided to send an embassy to Alexander the Great. Alexander was a leader on a big expedition. Ambhi hoped for support or perhaps some money.

Ambhi sent many wonderful gifts to Alexander.
