His name may have been Ambhi. Greek writers called him Taxiles. They named him after his city, Taxila. This city is in what is now Pakistan.

Ambhi had a neighbor named Porus. Ambhi was not on good terms with him. To stay safe, Ambhi sent gifts to Alexander the Great. Alexander was a famous leader on an expedition. Ambhi sent silver and many sheep. He also sent 3,000 fat oxen. He sent 700 horsemen to help.

Alexander was careful when he first saw these forces. Ambhi met him with even more gifts. Alexander gave Ambhi gold and silver ornaments. He also gave him 30 horses. Ambhi helped Alexander build a bridge over the Indus River. He also gave food to the troops. Ambhi welcomed the whole army to his city. He even led 5,000 men into the Battle of the Hydaspes. Later, a man named Chandragupta Maurya took over the land.
