A massive desert fills much of the basin. This is the Taklamakan Desert. It is very dry and hard to live in. Most people live in green spots called oases. These oases get water from rivers. The rivers start from melting snow in the mountains.

One major river is the Tarim River.

Long ago, people traveled through this area on trade routes. These were called Silk Roads. Some paths went north of the desert. Other paths went south. Some even went through the middle.

Today, the basin is a place for clean power. The sun and wind are very strong here. People use solar and wind power to make energy. They built a large power loop around the basin. This sends power to other parts of China. The ground also holds oil and natural gas. Some even think there is a huge sea deep underground.
