Tapputi

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A long time ago, a woman named Tapputi lived. She was a perfumer in a place called Assur. She is one of the first chemists we know by name. This means she was a person who studied how things change.

Tapputi worked at a royal palace. She was also an overseer there. An overseer is a person who manages a group or place. She worked with a person named ninu.

She used many plants to make her scents. She used flowers and oil. She also used myrrh and balsam. She used things called cyperus and calamus.

Tapputi had a special way to make her perfume. She added water and other solvents to her mix. A solvent is a liquid that can dissolve other things. She used a way called distillation. This means she heated her mix to separate the parts. Then she filtered the liquid many times. Filtering helps to clean the liquid. These steps helped her make her smells. We know about her from a cuneiform tablet. This is a clay tablet with writing on it. It is from around 1200 BC.
