Mary the Jewess was a famous scientist. She lived a long time ago in Alexandria. Some people think she lived between the first and third centuries. She was an alchemist. Alchemy is an old way of studying science. Mary was one of the first alchemists in the Western world. She made many special tools for her work.

One tool is the bain-marie. This is also called Mary's bath.

It is a double boiler. This is a way to use gentle heat. It keeps things from getting too hot. People still use this to cook food today.

Mary is also linked to the tribikos. This tool has three arms. It helps clean substances through a way called distillation. Distillation is a set of steps to purify liquids. Another tool was the kerotakis. This was an airtight container. It used heat to collect vapors. Because these tools were sealed tight, we still use the term "hermetically sealed" today. Mary's ideas helped shape the history of science.
