Cleopatra the Alchemist

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Cleopatra the Alchemist lived in Alexandria, Egypt. She was a writer and a thinker. She studied alchemy. Alchemy is a way to study how things change. Some people think she was a real person. Others think the name was used by a group of writers. She is not the same person as the famous Queen Cleopatra.

Cleopatra was a very important figure. One writer said she was one of four women who could make the philosopher's stone. This was a special object in alchemy. She also used weights and measures to study her work. Some say she helped invent the alembic. An alembic is a tool used for distillation. Distillation is a way to clean or separate liquids.

She wrote a famous work called the Chrysopoeia of Cleopatra. This name means "gold-making." It uses many symbols and drawings. One drawing is the Ouroboros. This is a snake eating its own tail. It shows how the end is the same as the beginning. She also used an eight-banded star. People think this symbol shows how to turn lead into silver.
