Other scientists like David Unwin and Mark Witton had different ideas. They thought some members belonged in different families. Since then, many researchers have studied how these creatures are related.

Learning about tapejarids is like solving a giant puzzle. Different scientists find new clues in fossils. For example, Brian Andres and his team redefined the group in 2014. In 2023, Rodrigo Pêgas and his team studied them again. They looked at how species like Caupedactylus fit in.

Most tapejarids were small to medium-sized animals. They possessed several unique physical traits, especially regarding their skulls. Most species had a bony crest rising from the snout. This crest was formed mostly by the premaxillary bones at the tip of the upper jaw. In some species, this bone supported a much larger crest. This larger structure was made of soft, fibrous tissue that extended back along the skull.

The skull of a tapejarid also featured a large nasoantorbital fenestra. This is a main opening in the skull located in front of the eyes. In this family, the opening spanned at least half the length of the entire skull. Their eye sockets were small and pear-shaped. Studies of their brain cases show they had extremely good vision. This vision was better than in other pterosaur groups. They likely relied almost exclusively on sight to hunt or interact with others.

Their body structure was also very unusual. Tapejarids had reduced shoulder girdles that hung low on the torso. This resulted in a "bottom decker" wing arrangement. This means their wings protruded from near the belly rather than the back. This setup is reminiscent of how some modern planes are designed.

Scientists believe tapejarids were arboreal, meaning they lived in trees. They had more curved claws than other azhdarchoid pterosaurs. They are often found in fossil sites alongside other arboreal flying vertebrates, such as early birds. Many experts speculate they were frugivores or omnivores. This idea comes from their parrot-like beaks. Direct evidence for plant-eating exists in a Sinopterus specimen. That fossil contains phytoliths and gastroliths in its abdominal cavity.

The classification of this family has changed many times. Brazilian paleontologist Alexander Kellner named the family in 1989. He defined it as the clade containing Tapejara and Tupuxuara. In 2007, Kellner divided the family into Tapejarinae and Thalassodrominae. However, other scientists challenged this model. In 2003, David Unwin suggested that Tupuxuara and Thalassodromeus were more distantly related to Tapejara. He believed they belonged to the Azhdarchidae family instead.

Other researchers have proposed different groupings over the years. In 2011, a study suggested the family Chaoyangopteridae should be part of Tapejaridae. This was not followed by all authors. In 2014, Brian Andres and his colleagues defined the family as the clade containing Tapejara and Sinopterus. They also created the group Tapejarini. More recently, in 2020, a new subfamily called Sinopterinae was named. This group includes species more closely related to Sinopterus than to Tapejara.

In 2023, Rodrigo Pêgas and his team studied these relationships again. They argued that Thalassodromidae and Tapejaridae should be separate families. They found that these groups belong within a larger group called Tapejaromorpha. In 2024, Pêgas provided further updates to these names. His work helps clarify how species like Caupedactylus and Aymberedactylus fit into the tree of life. These constant changes show how much we are still learning about these ancient creatures.
